This program is for high school students in grades 7 - 12 who have always wanted to step into a real research lab, meet scientists, and explore the world of science and infectious diseases!
The program introduces students to the world of microbiology through interactive sessions and hands-on experiments. Participants explore microbes, understand how diseases spread, and learn basic techniques like observing bacteria and extracting DNA. They also tour CHRF’s advanced laboratory facilities, get introduced to key scientific equipment, and engage in discussions with researchers.
By the end of this program, participants will understand :
1. How a state-of-the-art research laboratory works.
2. Basics of microbes and microbiology.
3. The importance of maintaining hygiene.
4. Why we get sick and how to identify bacteria in the lab.
5. How bacteria look under a microscope.
6. Essential laboratory equipment and machines used in microbiology, molecular biology, and the genomics labs.
7. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing and how scientists identify which antibiotics work.
8. Extraction and visualization of DNA, through simple and fun experiments.
